SCAsia 2025 Digital Twin Workshop

Digital Twins for Science
- Time: 09:00AM – 12:30PM
- Location: Room M2 – Melati Jr 4011 (Level 4)
Abstract
Digital Twins are accurate virtual replicas of real-world systems that combine sensor data with models to provide timely, beneficial information. Traditionally used in industry, the integration of high-performance computing (HPC), AI, and edge computing now allows digital twins to be applied in science and global policy. This includes areas like climate change, renewable energy, and healthcare, where real-time AI and uncertainty quantification can assist in life-saving decisions. Accurate simulations are becoming the primary source of virtual data, syncing with the real world across various scales, from subatomic to interstellar. The evolution from basic 3D models to near-identical digital twins is crucial for advancements in fields such as computational biomedicine, nuclear fusion, and factory automation. This workshop aims to bring together experts to discuss the challenges and opportunities in making digital twins a standard practice in HPC and to identify key principles for their effective use.
At the workshop, Kenneth Sung — Managing Director of Metason — shared practical insights from building city-scale digital twins, and how NVIDIA Omniverse is transforming urban planning, data management, and simulation.
His session, “Creating Seamless City-Scale Digital Twins: Leveraging NVIDIA Omniverse for Urban Development,” covered:
- Critical considerations: Key factors in creating city-scale digital twins, drawn from real-world delivery experience
- Data conversion tips: Practical guidance on managing and converting diverse data types for digital twins
- System architecture: Strategies for handling massive datasets effectively at city scale
- Prompt-to-USD scene generation: A walkthrough of integrating LLMs, online APIs, and USD scene generation in Omniverse
- Water flow simulation with WSP: A collaboration highlighting digital twin applications beyond visualisation
